In the first of two stops in North Carolina on Tuesday, Donald Trump kept up a drumbeat of criticism against Hillary Clinton over her views on immigration, as Trump again argued that more needs to be done to screen those who want to become U.S. citizens, to make sure those people do not have any terrorist sympathies.

“We have seen how failure to screen who is entering the United States puts all of our citizens in great danger,” Trump said, as he once more accused Clinton of favoring “open borders.”

“We want to make sure we are only admitting people into our country who love our country,” Trump said to cheers.

A day after a naturalized U.S. citizen from Afghanistan was arrested in a New York and New Jersey bomb plot, Trump said it’s just common sense to more closely examine who wants to be in America.

“These attacks were made possible because of our extremely open immigration system,” Trump said, as he vowed to do things differently if elected.

“I’ve been saying this for a long time,” Trump told the crowd, “Immigration security is national security.”

Trump began his speech by urging voters in North Carolina to cast their ballots as soon as possible – as absentee ballots are already out in the Tar Heel state.

The early numbers show Democrats with a small edge in that early vote – as North Carolina may well end up as one of the biggest battlegrounds for November.
